Spyro
the
Dragon
and
Crash
Bandicoot
are
two
of
the
most
iconic
video
game
characters
from
the
late
1990s,
both
originally
developed
as
platformers
for
the
Sony
PlayStation.
Crash
Bandicoot
was
created
by
Naughty
Dog
and
released
in
1996.
He
quickly
became
known
as
PlayStation’s
unofficial
mascot,
known
for
his
fast-paced
levels
and
quirky
humor.
Spyro
the
Dragon,
developed
by
Insomniac
Games,
was
released
in
1998,
offering
a
colorful
3D
platforming
experience
centered
around
a
young
purple
dragon
in
a
fantasy
world.
In
2005,
both
franchises
had
left
their
original
developers.
Universal
Interactive
(later
part
of
Vivendi
Games)
owned
both
properties,
and
new
titles
were
developed
by
various
studios.
During
this
period,
the
quality
of
the
games
varied,
and
neither
franchise
was
as
critically
acclaimed
as
in
their
early
years.
Today,
Crash
Bandicoot
and
Spyro
are
owned
by
Activision
(which
is
owned
by
Microsoft).
Both
franchises
saw
a
major
revival
with
the
Crash
Bandicoot
N.
Sane
Trilogy
(2017)
and
the
Spyro
Reignited
Trilogy
(2018),
which
remastered
the
original
games
for
modern
consoles.
These
were
followed
by
new
titles
like
Crash
Bandicoot
4:
It's
About
Time
(2020).
The
characters
remain
beloved
by
fans
and
continue
to
be
important
names
in
gaming
history.
