1998,
Disney
released
Hercules
II:
The
Return
of
Hades,
a
direct-to-video
sequel
to
the
1997
animated
hit
Hercules.
Created
by
a
smaller
Disney
animation
team,
the
film
aimed
to
continue
the
story
of
the
hero
and
his
adventures
in
Olympus.
Unlike
the
original,
which
featured
bold
animation
and
a
gospel-inspired
soundtrack,
Hercules
II
had
a
more
modest
production,
with
simpler
animation
and
a
shorter
runtime.
The
story
followed
Hades
as
he
escaped
the
Underworld
to
seek
revenge,
forcing
Hercules
to
protect
both
Olympus
and
Meg.
Despite
its
efforts,
the
film
did
not
achieve
major
success.
Critics
found
it
lacking
the
charm
and
energy
of
the
original,
and
fans
were
disappointed
by
the
lower
quality.
It
sold
moderately
on
VHS
but
quickly
faded
from
public
attention.
While
not
a
complete
failure,
Hercules
II
is
largely
forgotten
today,
remembered
mostly
by
dedicated
Disney
fans
and
McDonald's
Happy
Meal
collectors.
