In
1979,
McDonald’s
rolled
out
something
entirely
new
for
America:
the
first
national
Happy
Meal
promotion.
It
wasn’t
just
food
—
it
was
an
experience
wrapped
in
bright
colors
and
surprise.
The
idea
had
been
tested
in
a
few
cities,
but
this
summer,
kids
across
the
country
could
open
their
own
little
box
of
joy.
The
very
first
Happy
Meal
came
in
a
circus-themed
cardboard
box,
complete
with
games
and
puzzles
printed
on
the
sides.
Inside,
there
was
a
hamburger
or
cheeseburger
(or
small
fries
and
a
drink),
plus
the
real
star
—
a
toy.
These
first
toys
were
simple
but
magical:
McDoodle
stencil
rulers,
spinning
tops,
and
“McWrist”
wallets
that
made
kids
feel
like
they
owned
treasure.
Parents
loved
that
it
kept
children
entertained
at
the
table;
kids
loved
that
they
could
take
the
fun
home.
Commercials
beamed
with
bright
jingles,
showing
children
smiling
with
both
fries
and
their
prizes.
The
Happy
Meal
didn’t
just
sell
burgers
—
it
sold
moments.
It
was
the
first
time
a
national
fast-food
chain
had
blended
food,
play,
and
marketing
in
such
a
complete
package.
And
that
summer
of
1979,
McDonald’s
unknowingly
started
a
tradition
that
would
define
childhood
for
decades.
